Hillsborough County's Public Service Day Highlights the Work of Public Works and Water Resources

Hillsborough County's dedication to residents takes center stage with the upcoming Public Service Day, hosted by Public Works and Water Resources. This family-friendly morning event will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 18, 2024, at the County's West Service Unit, 9805 Sheldon Rd., Tampa, FL 33635. There will be live demonstrations, free mosquitofish, a bounce house, food, drinks, and giveaways.

Public Service Day offers a unique opportunity for residents to see large equipment up close, meet County employees, and to learn about the vital work carried out by the County. The day promises an array of interactive experiences for residents and children designed to foster a deeper understanding for the work of Public Works and Water Resources. Attendees can see firsthand the machinery and tools utilized in various public projects.

 

Public Service Day also features a dynamic job fair and opportunities to join the Hillsborough County team. Job-seekers may explore career possibilities within Public Works and Water Resources and even receive on-the-spot job offers.

Interviews will be held for the following positions: 

  • Industrial Electrician  
  • Industrial Mechanic 
  • Transportation Worker  
  • Utilities Maintenance Operator  

Public Service Day is the kickoff to National Public Works Week, which is May 19-24, 2024. The week celebrates the working people who play an integral part in the everyday lives of County residents by providing streets, water, sewers, mosquito control, traffic engineering and maintenance, public buildings, and solid waste collection and disposal. The American Public Works Association has sponsored National Public Works Week since 1960. This year's theme is "Advancing Quality of Life for All."

By the numbers

Hillsborough County Public Works has built and maintains:

  • Over 7,400 traffic-lane miles, 570 traffic signals, and 279 bridges
  • 41,545 drainage structures, and 1,400 miles of stormwater pipes
  • 16,000 mosquito production sites

Water Resources each day supplies:

  • More than 72 million gallons of drinking water
  • Treats 46 million gallons of wastewater
  • Distributes 29 million gallons of reclaimed water

Conservation & Environmental Lands Management oversees:

  • Oversees 84,000 acres of park and preserve land
  • Serves over 2.8 million parks and preserve visitors annually

Solid Waste Division:

  • Processes over 1.2 million tons of municipal, commercial, and residential waste annually
  • Converted over 520,000 tons of solid waste to energy, generating enough energy to power up to 23,000 households
