HSWCD In The Community: Brandon Movie Night With Parks and Recreation

The Hillsborough Soil and Water Conservation District was out in force again in the community, this time at the movie night hosted by Hillsborough County Parks and Recreation at the Brandon Park and Recreation Center on Dec. 2.

“What a great time we had meeting with so many kids and their families at our two tables, one filled with lots of conservation information and other with ‘BEE’ coloring and word search activity sheets,” said HSWCD Executive Director Betty Jo Tompkins. “We recently launched ‘Operation Pollination,’ in conjunction with Rotary Club of Brandon Global Eco, and look forward to kids, families, individuals, nonprofits, businesses, schools and other groups and organizations signing our ‘Pollinator Pledge’ and coming up with pollination projects that both educate and promote our conservation message.”

 

Operation Pollination continues through April 2024 and will be a part of HSWCD's annual Hillsborough 100 Conservation Challenge.

But that’s not the only HSWCD initiative in discussion at the Dec. 3 movie night, featuring a large-screen showing of the holiday classic, “Home Alone.”

 

“Among the many programs, projects and activities we present annually are poster, speech, photography, land judging, rain barrel decorating and youth horticulture show contests that drive home the message that conservation is everybody’s business,” Tompkins said. “At fairs and festivals and community events like movie night, we’re also on hand to promote not only our initiatives, but also those of our cooperating partners.

 

HWCD's long list of partners include the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Natural Resources Conservation Service, Hillsborough County Farm Bureau, National Association of Conservation Districts, Association of Florida Conservation Districts, the Florida Strawberry Growers Association and many, many more.

 

“Again, we’d like to thank Hillsborough County parks and recreation representatives for hosting such a memorable evening, and the many families who stopped by our tables to see what we have to offer,” Tompkins said. “It truly was a great community event for the Greater Brandon community and we were grateful to be in attendance.”
